The Cunning Man: a Walk & Dine Destination

Mr & Mrs Fueled by Beer love Google Maps! Whenever we’ve walked in the direction of the Fox & Hounds walk & dine, at the point where we join the Kennet & Avon canal path, and turned west towards Theale, there have always been people walking along the canal from further east. Curious minds wanted to know: what’s in that direction…

The Cunning Man

The Cunning Man

Google Maps to the rescue: it showed us how we can have a completely off-road walk & dine to the Cunning Man at Burghfield Bridge. The pub is currently owned by Mitchells & Butlers (M&B) and operated as part of their Vintage Inns collection of country pubs..

CaskMarqueLogoActually we’ve already stopped in at The Cunning Man – we cheated – we were driving. Based on our recent experience we’d place the pub somewhere between the Chef & Brewer and Wadworth pubs. The pub is not CAMRA LocAle accredited – and we’ve never seen a local ale on the bar during our visits – however the pub is Cask Marque approved.

Either way, The Cunning Man has long been regarded as one of the Reading area’s nicest country pubs – it remains so – and, knowing it’s canal-side, we always wondered if we could reach it on foot. We can, and we will – soon. Watch this space. 🙂
