Theale Village: a Walk & Dine Destination

This walk & dine presents an urban alternative to the rural Fox & Hounds walk and takes us instead to Theale village where no less than five pubs beckon all within a 1/2 mile stretch. And whereas the Fox & Hounds walk is really only suitable in fine weather and during daylight hours the Theale village walk is good anytime…

Theale's main drag - High Street

Theale’s main drag – High Street

The main drag through Theale village is what was once the London to Bath road. During the 18th Century coaching heyday Theale was a major stop along the way with as many as thirteen inns lining the High Street at one time. It was with some justification that Theale during this time was jokingly referred to as “The Ale” due to the amount of beer that was brewed and consumed there.

Today the modern A4/Bath Road bypasses the village and the old road is now, from east to west: High Street, Church Street, and The Green. And although most of the coaching inns are long gone the Bull, The Falcon, The Crown Inn, The Red Lion, and The Volunteer remain, some still showing signs of their coaching origins in the form of enclosed courtyards and stable buildings behind the pubs that once serviced the needs of the horses and their drivers.

The Crown Inn at Theale

For the purposes of this post I start this walk, like the Fox & Hounds walk, from Mill Lane, Calcot, at the entrance to the Fords Farm estate. From here it is 3 miles each way to the farthest distant pub, The Volunteer.

This walk & dine can also be started from Reading station or any point along the yellow 26 bus route to its terminus at Sainsburys Calcot superstore. Alternatively take a train from Reading Station to Theale; from Theale station the High Street is a short 600 metre walk away.

I have published separate blog posts for each pub: here they are…

The Bull: a Wadworth Pub

The Falcon: a Historic Coaching Inn

The Crown Inn: a CAMRA LocAle pub

The Red Lion: a Theale Village Pub

The Volunteer: a Fullers Pub
