When Mr & Mrs Fueled by Beer are in or near Reading town center, and in the mood for a really nice pint of Real Ale from a local brewery, four CAMRA LocAle accredited pubs are at the top our list…
The Allied Arms in St Mary’s Butts is a frequent finalist in Reading CAMRA’s pub of the year contest with good reason. It offers five cask ales featuring Fullers London Pride and Loddon Hullaballoo, plus three rotating guests. During our recent visit one of the guests was the Allied’s ‘house’ ale “Festival” brewed for them by Loddon. So on this occasion two of the five pumps were pulling LocAles – nice!
The Allied has two bars: the front bar faces the street; the other bar in the rear of the pub leads out to Reading’s best kept secret – the outdoor beer garden. This usually means the back bar and adjoining garden will be busy, noisy, etc., while in the front bar you can sit and enjoy quiet conversation.
In keeping with all the best Real Ale pubs, you won’t have loud music blaring, and if there’s a screen it’ll typically be small and tuned into something like golf or sheepdog trials. There’s nothing here to attract the young lager-lout crowd, which is fine by Mr & Mrs Fueled by Beer.
