Craft Beer Cardiff / Cwrw Crefft Caerdydd

An area of the UK currently producing more than its fair share of superb craft beer is Wales. Fueled by Beer has been noticing this at almost every CAMRA event but nowhere was this more evident than at this year’s Stourbridge Beer Festival where 25% of the cask ale was sourced from up and coming brewers along the M4 corridor in South Wales…

An interesting development among the most adventurous of these Welsh brewers is the opening of brewery taps in Cardiff city centre. These, together with previously established Zerodegrees and BrewDog bars, place the Welsh capital firmly on the map as a craft beer destination worth visiting.

Scroll to the bottom for a Welsh translation.

Urban Tap House

The first brewery tap to open in Cardiff – this one by Newport’s Tiny Rebel Brewing. Urban Tap House naturally showcases the range of Tiny Rebel beers on cask and keg as well as a selection of guest ales from around the UK.

There is also cider and perry on offer and the bar reputedly serves Cardiff’s best burger. This is a true craft beer bar by the Fueled by Beer definition: no mass-market beers sold here.

The Gravity Station

waenlogoYou could say this is Cardiff’s first Micropub, the brainchild of The Waen Brewery of Llanidloes in Powys. This is where Sue Hayward produces her amazing dark beers like Chilli Plum Porter and Blackberry Stout (her Pales and IPAs are bloody good too).

Gravity Station Cardiff is primarily the Waen Brewery bottle shop and taproom with, as the name suggests, casks on stillage pouring directly into the glass. Additional guest ales offered in bottle, on keg, or cask feature other notable Welsh brewers, among others.

A second Gravity Station recently opened in Swansea.

Hopbunker

The house that Gazza built; the newest of Cardiff’s craft beer bars; opened in June 2015. Hopbunker, as its name suggests, is a cellar bar beneath Kingsway across from Cardiff Castle near the western end of Queen Street. Hopbunker is first and foremost the brewery tap of Hopcraft/Pixie Spring Brewing of Pontyclun, and it’s all about the beer.

So, if you want to spend some time here drinking from the amazing array of 15 cask ale pumps and 20 craft keg taps – more than anywhere else in Cardiff – you’d better eat somewhere first. Bags of crisps and other simple snacks is all you’ll get here.

During Mr & Mrs Fueled by Beer’s visit there was plenty of guest cask and keg choice – it’s a must visit destination.

City Arms

I include this traditional pub (with a question mark on the map) because although owned by the dominant old-school regional brewer and pub owner SA Brain the City Arms acts as Brains showcase for its newer craft beer arm. It has been recognized as POTY in recent years by the local CAMRA branch.

Special thanks to Google Translate for the following English to Welsh translation…

Ardal o bryd yn y DU yn cynhyrchu mwy na’i chyfran deg o gwrw grefft gwych yw Cymru. Fueled by Beer wedi bod yn sylwi ar hyn bob digwyddiad CAMRA ar bron ond roedd hyn yn gwbl amlwg nag yng Ngŵyl Cwrw Stourbridge eleni lle mae 25% o’r cwrw casgen yn dod o hyd ac bragwyr yn dod ar hyd coridor yr M4 yn Ne Cymru…

Datblygiad diddorol ymhlith y rhai mwyaf anturus o’r rhain bragwyr Cymraeg yw agor tapiau bragdy yng nghanol dinas Caerdydd. Mae’r rhain, ynghyd â bariau Zerodegrees a BrewDog a sefydlwyd eisoes, rhowch y brifddinas Cymru yn gadarn ar y map fel cyrchfan cwrw crefft sy’n werth ymweld â hi.

Urban Tap House

Mae’r tap bragdy cyntaf i agor yng Nghaerdydd – mae hyn yn un gan Tiny Rebel Brewing Casnewydd. Urban Tap House yn naturiol yn arddangos yr amrywiaeth o gwrw Tiny Rebel ar casgen a keg yn ogystal â detholiad o gwrw gwadd o bob cwr o’r DU.

Ceir hefyd seidr a pherai ar gael ac mae’r bar yn ôl pob sôn yn gwasanaethu byrgyrs gorau Caerdydd. Mae hwn yn bar cwrw crefft cywir gan y ddiffiniad Fueled by Beer: dim cwrw farchnad dorfol gwerthu yma.

The Gravity Station

Fe allech chi ddweud hyn yw Micropub cyntaf Caerdydd, syniad The Waen Brewery Llanidloes ym Mhowys. Dyma lle Sue Hayward yn cynhyrchu ei gwrw tywyll anhygoel fel Chilli Plum Porter a Blackberry Stout (ei Pales a IPA yn gwaedlyd da hefyd).

Gravity Station Caerdydd yn bennaf y siop botel Waen Brewery a taproom gyda, fel yr awgryma’r enw, casgenni ar stillage arllwys yn uniongyrchol i mewn i’r gwydr. Cwrw gwadd ychwanegol a gynigir yn y botel, ar keg, neu casgen cynnwys bragwyr Cymreig nodedig eraill, ymhlith eraill.

Agorwyd ail Gravity Station yn ddiweddar yn Abertawe.

Hopbunker

Y tŷ a adeiladwyd Gazza; y mwyaf newydd o fariau cwrw crefft Caerdydd; agorwyd ym mis Mehefin 2015. Hopbunker, fel yr awgryma’r enw, yn bar seler o dan Ffordd y Brenin ar draws o Gastell Caerdydd ger mhen gorllewinol Heol y Frenhines. Hopbunker yn gyntaf ac yn bennaf y tap bragdy o Hopcraft/Pixie Spring Brewing o Pont-y-Clun, ac mae’r cyfan am y cwrw.

Felly, os ydych am dreulio ychydig o amser yma yn yfed o amrywiaeth anhygoel o 15 o pympiau o gwrw casgen a 20 tapiau o keg crefft – mwy nag unrhyw le arall yng Nghaerdydd – byddech yn well bwyta rywle arall yn gyntaf. Bagiau creision a byrbrydau syml eraill i gyd byddwch yn cyrraedd yma.

Yn ystod yr ymweliad Mr & Mrs Fueled by Beer roedd digon o casgen gwadd a dewis keg – mae’n rhaid i ymweld cyrchfan..

City Arms

Yr wyf yn cynnwys y dafarn draddodiadol (gyda marc cwestiwn ar y map) oherwydd er eiddo i’r bragwr a dafarn berchennog rhanbarthol hen-ysgol dominyddol SA Brain y City Arms yn gweithredu fel Brains arddangos ar gyfer ei fraich cwrw crefft. Mae wedi cael ei gydnabod fel Tafarn y Flwyddyn yn y blynyddoedd diwethaf gan gangen CAMRA lleol.
