For lovers of dark winter ales (like Mr & Mrs Fueled by Beer) East London CAMRA’s annual festival at the Round Chapel in Hackney is hard to beat. We attended this year’s event earlier this month and enjoyed a wonderful selection of ‘dark side’ beers…
In addition to a wonderful beer selection this festival is notable for its unique venue which fosters a really friendly crowd. Eastenders are generally friendly folk but the environment at The Round Chapel certainly brings out the very best. This is our second visit to the Pig’s Ear festival (read 2014) so for those who haven’t attended before, we are comfortable thoroughly recommending it. Of course 2015 is already history but do mark your calendars for the 2016 and 2017 events: Tuesday November 29th to Saturday December 3rd 2016; and Tuesday December 5th to Saturday December 9th 2017.
The 2015 event featured more than 220 cask ales from around 100 breweries. More than half came from LocAle brewers, such is the strength of the London craft brewing scene right now. Also, around half the ales were in the dark category–a greater proportion than usual–while the other half were the usually more common bitters, goldens and IPAs. As I write this post the festival program is still viewable online at issuu.com. It’s worth a read if you haven’t been to Pig’s Ear before and might be interested in attending in future.
By the way, a bit of trivia about this year’s event: there was a vegetarian food concession lined up who pulled out at the last minute. Apparently they didn’t like the ‘Jurassic Pork’ tagline. They weren’t missed.
